The milliner, who won an award at this year’s Easter Show, only took up the trade professionally in 2005 after a career as a high school teacher of textiles and design.

In her Rozelle workshop overflowing with feathers, ribbons, colours and fabrics, the milliner said a hat was “part of the look” for women at the races.

Hat makers like Catherine Kelly are also busy making the must-have items at the races or a Melbourne Cup party.

The workshop was held to encourage pupils to develop new skills with fabrics as they prepare for coursework and exams. The class then went on to design and make their own samples throughout the day, Cheap Philadelphia Phillies Hats which will go towards their grades.
